A large piece: over 150 centimeters high, done in Shanghai wood. The wood was salvaged in the hutongs of Shanghai, the old parts of the city that have to make way for the new Shanghai.
I did not salvage the wood myself....that was done by my cousin and his wife, who lived in the city for a while.
I love the paradox in this lady: she is definitey a modern Chinese girl, but wearing an old fashioned Mao cap. I encountred this girl for the first time in a book about China. The picture was taken by the well known American photographer Jack Hollingsworth, who generously let me use his creation as a reference for my piece.
China Girl was first shown to the public at PAN Amsterdam 2009 (gallery Canvas International).
